1. Go through every single file and delete things you don't need anymore. Literally. Think .... bad photos, old and unneeded documents, games, etc! Then from there, back up your docs into a hard drive. I have this crazy fear that one day my laptop will stop working and I'm not going to have anything saved. I try to back it up every month or so, but I often forget. As long as something is stored for those "what if" moments. It doesn't hurt to be safe!
2. Organize the little things into folders. It'll help you have a place to go to when you're looking for a particular photo or document and it won't get busy on your desktop. I don't like the blue colored folders that come with the Macs, so I change mine to a pink colored one and they make all the difference.
3. Get rid of anything taking storage. Uninstall old programs you're no longer using. Go through your messages and delete those (yes, they take up space!) and go through your inbox and declutter like crazy! I have a really bad habit of keeping old emails and never deleting them, but it's starting to clear my mind when I have a clean inbox. Haha!
